HMS Manchester. The only warship I have ever been aboard.
HMS Manchester was the designated Armilla patrol convoy escort for allied vessels passing through the Straits of Hormuz to the Persian Gulf during the Iran/Iraq war.
Dates are not easily recalled these days but, during I think, early September 1988, we did an exchange visit via inflatable with Senior Naval Officer Middle East(SNOME) in the Persian Gulf The Radio Officer and the Second Mate were chosen to visit HMS Manchester. I suppose we were the only expendable officers on Tor Bay at the time.
I have often wondered if that two hour visit counts as Military Service.

Leaving Tor Bay whilst at sea AND in a war zone was not quite … hmm… How does “acceptable” sound?
